Suspect: Aengus Ó Snodaigh, Irish man (judged from name)Aengus Ó Snodaigh

A garda money laundering investigation into Liberty Recycling, a charity based at Bluebell Industrial Estate in west Dublin, led to searches across Dublin, eastern and southern regions the previous week in which detectives from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau seized two BMW X5 cars, luxury bags, watches and jewellery valued at around €300,000, with no arrests made. The charity, chaired by Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh, acquired fixed assets totalling €1,052,028 over four years from 2022 to 2025, including a Porsche and a BMW Jeep registered to a company called Liberty Developments and in the possession of a senior staff member. The Charities Regulator said it has very serious concerns that the charity's operations and bank account are being used for unlawful purposes and sought a wind-up order under the Charities Act 2009. On 27 October 2026 the High Court appointed provisional liquidators to the charity, placing executive control into independent hands, with a hearing on the winding-up application scheduled for November.

Following a trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, he was sentenced to five years in prison by Judge Orla Crowe. Baby George Duggan, a newborn from Rathpeacon, Co Cork, died on 21 December 2022, two days after being delivered by emergency caesarean section at Cork University Maternity Hospital at 29 weeks and three days. His parents Áine and John Duggan brought a High Court clinical negligence action against the HSE, alleging that a failure to review and assess the mother during an 11-day window from 8 December to 19 December meant a caesarean section should have been performed earlier. The HSE admitted it breached its duty of care in not performing more frequent foetal monitoring after the 8 December review but denied it caused George's death. The case was settled at the Four Courts before Mr Justice Paul Coffey in October 2026, with a statutory €35,000 mental distress payment divided between the parties.

A Volkswagen Passat was stolen from a property in Clogherhead, Co Louth, between 22 and 23 January 2013 and used two days later in the robbery at Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, Co Louth, during which Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, a married father of two, was shot dead by Aaron Brady. James Flynn, a 35-year-old man, was charged with conspiring to burgle cars at various locations in 2012 and 2013; the Special Criminal Court found the wider charge not proven but amended the indictment to convict him of stealing the Passat, and he was sentenced to eight years in December 2023. The Court of Appeal overturned that conviction in 2025, finding the post-trial amendment breached Flynn's right to natural justice, and ordered a retrial on the original charge. In October 2026, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled the retrial should proceed only on the amended charge relating to the Passat, and Judge Brian O'Moore ordered Flynn retried at the Special Criminal Court. Aaron Brady, 35, of Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, is serving a life sentence with a 40-year minimum for the murder, having been found guilty in 2020.
