Man who raped landlady appeals conviction over evidence lacuna
In June 2016 in Dublin, a woman who had sub-let part of her home to tenant Dmitrus Aleinkovs, a 33-year-old man, said she was raped by a drugs courier and then by Aleinkovs while she was paralysed after taking cocaine. Aleinkovs left for Latvia before being charged, was extradited back to Ireland in December 2022, and was convicted at the Central Criminal Court in October 2024 of one count of rape, receiving a seven-year sentence. His defence argued the conviction should be quashed over missing interview tapes and transcript errors, and the prosecution responded. In October 2026, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy reserved judgment on the appeal.
