  • Supreme Court dismisses Regency Hotel murder facilitation appeal in Dublin Facilitating a criminal organisation · Co. Dublin

David Byrne, a 33-year-old Irish man from Crumlin, was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in Whitehall, Dublin 9, on 5 February 2016 when five men, three disguised as armed gardaí carrying AK-47 assault rifles, stormed the building during a boxing weigh-in in an attack intended to kill Daniel Kinahan. Gerard Hutch, 59, of Clontarf, Dublin, was extradited from Spain in September 2021 and charged with murder, while Jonathan Dowdall, 44, a former Sinn Féin councillor, and his father Patrick Dowdall, 65, pleaded guilty to facilitating the murder by booking a hotel room the night before. The Special Criminal Court acquitted Hutch of murder in April 2023, finding the key prosecution witness Dowdall unreliable, while convicting Paul Murphy, 61, and Jason Bonney, 50, of facilitating the attack by providing getaway vehicles. Murphy was sentenced to nine years and Bonney to eight-and-a-half years in May 2023, and the Court of Appeal rejected their conviction appeals in November 2025. The Supreme Court dismissed Bonney's further appeal on 21 July 2026, leaving the convictions and sentences intact.

Crotty pleaded not guilty on 15 January 2024, and his trial opened at the Special Criminal Court that week. Co-accused Declan Brady, 56, of Naas, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to the same charge the previous week. The trial is ongoing before a three-judge panel.

  • Gerard Hutch acquitted of Regency Hotel murder in Dublin Murder · Co. Dublin

Five men, three disguised as armed gardaí carrying AK-47 assault rifles, stormed the Regency Hotel on the Swords Road in Dublin 9 on 5 February 2016 during a boxing weigh-in, shooting dead David Byrne, 33, from Crumlin, and injuring Aaron Bolger and Sean McGovern, while the main target Daniel Kinahan escaped. Gerard Hutch, 58, of Clontarf, Dublin 3, was charged with the murder after being arrested in Fuengirola, Spain, in August 2021 and extradited to Ireland in September 2021. Jonathan Dowdall, 44, and his father Patrick Dowdall, 65, pleaded guilty to facilitating the murder, while Paul Murphy, 59, and Jason Bonney, 50, were convicted of providing getaway vehicles. The 52-day trial at the Special Criminal Court opened in October 2022, and on 17 April 2023 the court acquitted Hutch of murder, finding the attack was orchestrated by the Hutch criminal organisation but it could not rely on the unsupported evidence of Jonathan Dowdall to prove Hutch was one of the shooters. On 7 June 2023, the court refused Hutch's application for his legal costs to be paid by the State.
