Michael Connolly, a man from Dundalk, County Louth, was observed by gardaí driving in a convoy on 16 December 2014 with another man who was later found with two improvised explosive devices. He was convicted of IRA membership by the Special Criminal Court in 2017 and sentenced to three years, spending 14 months in prison before the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2018. He was acquitted after a retrial at the Special Criminal Court in 2019, and in April 2021 the court found a miscarriage of justice due to a grave defect in the administration of justice. The DPP's High Court challenge to that finding was dismissed in December 2023, but the Court of Appeal overturned the miscarriage of justice ruling in July 2026, holding it was a fundamental error of law.
