Dublin appeal court quashes miscarriage of justice in IRA membership case

Michael Connolly, a man from Dundalk, County Louth, was observed by gardaí driving in a convoy on 16 December 2014, and another man in the convoy was later found with two improvised explosive devices. He was charged with IRA membership, convicted by the Special Criminal Court in 2017 and sentenced to three years, but the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2018 and he was acquitted after a retrial in 2019. In April 2021 the Special Criminal Court declared a miscarriage of justice, a finding the DPP challenged in the High Court and lost in December 2023. In July 2026 the Court of Appeal overturned the miscarriage of justice certificate, ruling it was a fundamental error of law.
