latest first- Man sentenced to 12 months for stabbing garda in Dundalk Assault causing harm · Co. Louth
On 26 September 2019, a garda was attacked at The Bakehouse apartments on Church Street, Dundalk, after he was called over abusive visitors to the home of Michael Connolly (56). Connolly stabbed the garda with a pointed trowel, put his fingers in the garda's eyes, and banged his head off concrete, and the garda was taken to hospital. Connolly was later sentenced for assault causing harm at Dundalk Circuit Court, a hearing reported on 13 November 2024. Judge Dara Hayes adjusted the sentence to 12 months, to run consecutively to the 10 years Connolly was already serving.

Michael Connolly, 55, scalded his cellmate Mark Lawlor, 37, with hot water from a borrowed kettle before strangling him at Cloverhill Prison, Dublin, on the night of 22 November 2019 into the early hours of 23 November. Lawlor was pronounced dead at 12.55am. Connolly, originally from County Louth and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity. In August 2023, a jury at the Central Criminal Court found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility by a 10-2 majority. In October 2023, Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford sentenced him to 12 years' imprisonment, with two years suspended for five years.
