Following a Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation probe into organised crime activity in Dublin, retired Garda superintendent John Murphy, 65, and serving gardaí Manus Keane, 46, Detective Aidan Stratford, 50, and Detective Eoghan Clerkin, 51, were arrested and charged in April 2026 with corruption, facilitating a criminal organisation, perverting the course of justice, and bribery, with alleged activity spanning April 2016 to September 2021. Murphy and Stratford were remanded in custody, Keane was granted bail, and Clerkin was remanded in custody after his separate charges in April 2026. Murphy obtained bail in the High Court in August 2026. In September 2026, Murphy and Stratford were further charged with conspiring to deceive people out of money, and the single charge against Detective Inspector Brian Roberts, 51, was withdrawn, leaving 189 charges against four remaining defendants directed to face trial on indictment.

A four-year Garda investigation into allegations that retired superintendent John Murphy, 64, a man, leaked intelligence to the Hutch organised crime group has resulted in a recommendation to charge Gerry Hutch, 61, a man, with directing a crime gang. The probe began in September 2021 with the arrest of a former senior officer, and in September 2022 Hutch was taken from Wheatfield Prison in West Dublin for questioning on suspicion of directing a crime gang. Murphy was questioned from Midlands Prison in January 2023, and Hutch was acquitted of the 2016 murder of David Byrne at the Regency Airport Hotel in April 2023. A file recommending charges was submitted to the DPP in 2024, and as of March 2025 the DPP has yet to decide whether to prosecute.

On 29 September 2021, GNBCI officers recovered just under 13kg of cannabis worth €259,120 during a search of the home of John Murphy, a 62-year-old retired Garda superintendent, in Clontarf, north Dublin. Murphy was arrested and detained at Irishtown Garda Station, then charged on 3 October 2021 with possession for sale or supply of cannabis under section 15A of the Misuse of Drugs Act. He pleaded guilty at Cloverhill District Court in March 2022, and the case was sent to the Circuit Court for sentencing. On 4 October 2022, Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Murphy to six and a half years' imprisonment, backdated to 4 October 2021.
