John Murphy, a man aged 65, pleaded guilty to numerous counts of rape, indecent and sexual assault against his daughter Sophia Murphy, a woman now 40, at addresses in Co Galway and Co Mayo between 1988 and 2001 when she was aged three to 15, and to one count of sexual assault in 2010. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison in July 2018 and the Court of Appeal upheld that sentence in June 2022. Jacqueline Curran, a woman aged 60 and Murphy's ex-wife, was arrested in 2019 and pleaded guilty to two counts of exposing her daughter to assault, ill-treatment and neglect. In March 2026, Judge Sinéad McMullan at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Curran to 18 months in prison with the final four months suspended.
