On 24 December 2024, Gardaí say a highly intoxicated man, Stephen Dunne (34) of Portlaoise, abused staff and people in the area at Portlaoise Garda Station after going there believing he was being scammed. Dunne pleaded guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour at the station at Portlaoise District Court, and the court was told of his mental health background. The judge applied the Probation Act and directed that €100 be donated to the garda benevolent fund, which is the latest development reported.
