Evan Fitzgerald, a 22-year-old Irish man from Kiltegan, walked through Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town on 1 June 2025 firing a stolen pump-action shotgun into the air before self-inflicting a fatal wound when armed gardaí drew their weapons. A nine-year-old girl sustained a minor leg injury from falling while fleeing the scene, and no person was injured by the shots fired. Fitzgerald was on bail facing 13 firearms and explosives charges arising from a controlled delivery in which undercover gardaí supplied him with a G3 Heckler & Koch machine gun and a Remington M1911 handgun; the DPP directed the charges be withdrawn after his death. Fiosrú, the Garda Ombudsman, closed its investigation in July 2026 finding no criminal offence or disciplinary breach by the responding gardaí, and a coroner's inquest into his death has not yet taken place.
