Fiosrú finds no wrongdoing in Carlow shopping centre suicide
Evan Fitzgerald, a 22-year-old Irish man from Portrushen, Kiltegan, Co Wicklow, walked through Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town on 1 June 2025, firing a stolen shotgun into the air on several occasions before self-inflicting a fatal wound after armed gardaí drew their weapons. He had been on bail facing 13 firearms and explosives charges from a controlled delivery in which undercover gardaí supplied decommissioned weapons he had allegedly purchased on the dark web. The charges were withdrawn following his death, and a nine-year-old girl sustained a minor leg injury from falling while fleeing the scene. Fiosrú, the Garda Ombudsman, closed its investigation in July 2026 finding no criminal offence or disciplinary breach by responding gardaí, and a coroner's inquest into his death has not yet taken place.
