Richard Kearney (36), a corporal in the Irish Defence Forces, of Clondalkin, was involved in a money laundering operation that handled over €6.6 million of drug dealers' cash, with gardaí saying phone conversations suggested he laundered €6.6 million and £250,000 between April 2021 and May 2022. The offence he pleaded guilty to took place at an address in Fernwood Lawn, Tallaght, on 6 May 2022, when he had €25,000 that he knew or was reckless as to being proceeds of crime. Kearney pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, and on 29 January 2025 Judge Martin Nolan reduced a six-year headline sentence to three years after taking mitigating features into account. The latest development is that the Defence Forces have begun proceedings for his discharge.
