latest first- Bus driver awarded €63,750 over syringe stabbing in Cork Assault (stabbing with a syringe) · Co. Cork
On the evening of 6 April 2018, an unnamed person boarded a Bus Éireann bus near the Mayfield terminus in Cork City and stabbed driver Patrick O'Brien with a syringe before grabbing a bag of money from the driver's cab. The protective screen separating the driver from passengers was open at the time, and O'Brien was treated with medication for hepatitis and HIV, neither of which he contracted. He experienced anxiety and panic attacks when he returned to work nearly a year later. In a civil personal injury claim, the High Court found Bus Éireann liable under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 for failing to implement adequate control measures, while finding O'Brien 15% liable for keeping the screen open. Ms Justice Marguerite Bolger awarded O'Brien €63,750 in a ruling published in January 2023.
