  Patrick Maughan, 27, of Kimmage, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to stealing a mobile phone from a 64-year-old care assistant on Harold's Cross Road, Terenure, on 15 September 2023. Maughan and an unnamed accomplice chased the victim across the road, punched and kicked him, and stole his phone; Gardaí arrived while both men were still at the scene and found four mobile phones on Maughan, who had answered a video call on the stolen phone. An additional charge of assault causing harm was taken into account, and the victim was treated in hospital for cuts to his hands and legs. Judge Elma Sheahan reduced a four-year sentence to two years, to run consecutively to a 13-year sentence Maughan was already serving. The accomplice, described as the instigator, remains unlawfully at large.
