Michael Ryan, a 39-year-old former An Post employee from Killavullen, Co Cork, opened around 140 coloured cards and 77 commercial letters between 24 October and 18 November 2023 at the An Post delivery service unit in Carrignaroher, Fermoy, in search of cash to repay a loan shark debt. He was caught on CCTV removing two test items at a sorting office and pleaded guilty to theft of post. Ryan, who had been remanded in custody on 20 June 2025, was sentenced on 30 June 2025 before Judge Helen Boyle at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to 27 months in prison, fully suspended, and 240 hours of community service.
