In April 2010, Sergeant Michael Griffin, then head of an immigration unit, was pulled down the metal steps of an aircraft at Dublin Airport by a man, now 49, who was travelling on a stolen passport. The man was charged with assault and sentenced to six months in prison. In November 2022, the High Court heard that Griffin's shoulder injury, which required two surgeries, had left him unable to do heavy lifting and woken by pain at night. Ms Justice Leoni Reynolds awarded Griffin €87,950 in damages against the State.
