Michael Collins, 49, was driving high on cannabis when he led gardaí on a 35-minute chase on 27 May 2016, and his car collided with another vehicle at Waterside Great, Duleek, Co Meath, splitting in two. His 20-year-old passenger, Jillian Thornton, was thrown from the back seat and killed. After a 13-day trial in which Collins represented himself, he was convicted of dangerous driving causing death and other charges, and jailed for 14 years at Trim Circuit Court in July 2019. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal in July 2023, rejecting his argument that he should not have been allowed to represent himself at trial.
