Mary O'Callaghan, a 52-year-old Irish painter and decorator from Blackrock, Cork, fraudulently claimed over €69,000 in carer's allowance for minding her elderly mother in Cork while living in London between 2013 and 2019. She used a large amount of the defrauded money for foreign travel to Barbados and Morocco. She pleaded guilty to 20 sample counts of theft from the Department of Social Protection. In September 2021, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Cork Circuit Criminal Court, where the judge described the case as an egregious deliberate abuse of the social welfare system.
