Ian Horgan, a man of 40, attacked Hassan Baker, a 29-year-old man, and his 66-year-old mother Mary O'Callaghan with a clawhammer at their home at McCurtain Villas, Cork, on 26 March 2022. Horgan was arrested at Cork Courthouse in July 2022 and charged with four offences including assault causing serious harm and aggravated burglary. He pleaded guilty to both assault charges at Cork Circuit Criminal Court and was sentenced in June 2023 to nine years with the last six months suspended. The Court of Appeal increased the sentence to 11 years and three months with no suspended portion in March 2024 following a DPP undue-leniency appeal.
