Martin Cawley, 65, of Tallaght, Dublin, was found guilty by a jury of sexually assaulting his partner's 10-year-old niece at his home in October 2013. The offence came to light in 2015 when the girl confided in her sister, and Cawley was charged in early 2016. The trial was held in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in July 2021, where the complainant, now 18, waived her anonymity under the 1981 Rape Act. Cawley, who has 46 previous convictions including one sexual offence, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment with nine months suspended.
