A man broke into a house near University College Cork on 1 March 2022 and was convicted of raping a 22-year-old woman as she slept in her bedroom. Kamal Kumar Nepali, 24, of Beech Park, Ballincollig, Co Cork, was arrested and interviewed on 22 March 2022, and a jury at the Central Criminal Court convicted him on all counts on 7 December 2023. On 22 January 2024 he was remanded in custody, and on 11 March 2024 Mr Justice Michael MacGrath imposed a 10-year sentence with the final year suspended, backdated to 17 June 2022, and ordered no contact with the victim. His defence has indicated an intention to appeal.
