Man jailed over rape of woman sleeping in her home in Cork

A man broke into a house in Cork and raped a woman as she slept in her own bedroom on 1 March 2022. Gardaí were informed that day, and Kamal Kumar Nepali (24), of Beech Park, Ballincollig, Co Cork, was arrested and interviewed on 22 March 2022. He entered custody on 17 June 2022 and was found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict on 7 December 2023 of rape, burglary, assault causing harm, sexual assault and four counts of trespass, having denied the charges. On 11 March 2024 Mr Justice Michael MacGrath at the Central Criminal Court sentenced him, with sources differing on whether the term was nine years or 10 years with the final year suspended, and his defence counsel indicated an intention to appeal the sentence.
