In July 2020 Joseph Kiely, then aged 35, met a 14-year-old girl through Snapchat and gave her cigarettes and money in return for sex acts at hotels in Limerick on July 8 and July 9, 2020. The girl gave her mother a full account on July 11, 2020, and her mother reported the matter to gardaí, who took a statement from the girl and two voluntary interviews with Kiely. Kiely, of Cosgrave Park, Moyross, Limerick, pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of defilement of a child under 17. In late December 2024 Judge Colin Daly jailed him, then aged 39, for three years with the final year suspended and placed him on the sex offenders register for 10 years, and the most recent report, published on January 11, 2025, says a 21-day stay was granted on the custodial warrant.
