Cases
latest first- Garda Joseph Joyce's disability discrimination case at WRC Disability discrimination · Co. Longford
Garda Joseph Joyce, a man on the force since 2000, alleges at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) that he was discriminated against when he was put back on the beat in Longford town on 1 January 2022, during a winter Covid-19 surge. He has severe asthma and says he was sent on foot patrol despite his doctor's advice to cocoon, without a working radio and with empty hand sanitiser at the station. He alleges disability discrimination, harassment and victimisation under the Employment Equality Act 1998 in complaints against the Commissioner of An Garda Síochána and the Minister for Justice. The State has argued he was 'grossly exaggerating' safety requirements, while his lawyers say he is 'incredibly brave' to challenge Garda workplace culture. Closing arguments were heard on Thursday, the ninth day of hearings, as reported on 19 December 2025.
