On Thursday 29 May 2025, three shots were allegedly fired at a caravan at the Ballaghboy halting site, Quin Road, Ennis, Co Clare, ten minutes after the Garda Armed Support Unit left the scene, and no person was shot. A 23-year-old man, Johnny Donovan, of Bay 3, Rathmichael, Shankill, Co Dublin, has been charged with three counts of criminal damage and a fourth under the Firearms and Weapons Act, which are allegations. At Ennis District Court on 6 June 2025 bail was refused at a contested hearing and he was remanded in custody to Limerick prison. On 3 August 2025 the court heard he had secured High Court bail and was remanded on continuing High Court bail to re-appear at Ennis District Court on 1 October 2025 for DPP directions. On 15 February 2022, Johnny Donovan, 22, threatened to kill Garda Jim McNamara, 59, at Ennistymon Garda Station in Co Clare. The threats arose after gardaí seized Donovan's vehicle a number of days earlier. Donovan pleaded guilty at Ennis Circuit Court, where Judge Francis Comerford sentenced him to 20 months in prison on 15 February 2024. The judge described the offence as impulsive rather than calculated, and Donovan said he had been on drugs at the time.
