  • Burglary case adjourned in Dublin Burglary · Co. Dublin

John Matthews, a 42-year-old man, broke into a house on Upper Glenageary Road, south Dublin, on 5 September 2020 while the homeowners were on holiday, and a professional cat minder discovered the smashed back window and scattered jewellery boxes. No jewellery was taken, but small value cash including a 200,000 Thai baht note was missing, and the cash was later found at Matthews' home after he was identified on doorbell camera footage. Matthews pleaded guilty to the burglary at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 17 December 2021, where Judge Pauline Codd noted his 124 previous convictions and drug habit. The case was adjourned to 21 February 2022 to allow the defence to clarify whether a place exists for Matthews on a drug treatment programme.

  • Supreme Court upholds costs order in Roscommon assault case Assault · Co. Roscommon

On 28 April 2009, John Matthews, a wildlife ranger with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and Gerard Gearty were involved in an altercation at Cloonart near Roosky, County Roscommon. Both men were subsequently prosecuted for assault by the gardaí acting for the DPP before the District Court in Leitrim, but the DPP directed that both prosecutions be withdrawn on the second day of the hearing. The District Court judge struck out the prosecutions and ordered the DPP to pay their legal costs. The DPP successfully challenged the costs order in the High Court, but the Court of Appeal overturned that decision earlier in 2021. The Supreme Court has now dismissed the DPP's appeal, upholding the District Court's costs order in favour of the two men.
