On 20 June 2024 at 8.45am, John Collins (31), from Castlemeadows, Trim, Co Meath, was intoxicated on the side of a road at New Forest, Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath. Gardaí brought him to Athlone Garda Station, where a fixed charge penalty notice was issued and not paid. Collins, who was already serving an eight-month sentence for a different matter, appeared at Tullamore District Court by video link and entered a guilty plea to intoxication in a public place. Reports published on 16 March 2025 say Judge Andrew Cody imposed a €200 fine, and that Collins is expected to be released from prison in May.
