On 2 November 2024, Agnes Foley, an 85-year-old woman from Farran in Charleville, Co Cork, accidentally put her foot on the accelerator instead of the brake while parking her Mazda on Main Street, Charleville, and the car mounted the footpath, hitting two pedestrians and pinning them against a wall. Mary Fehilly, a 72-year-old woman, died later that evening in Cork University Hospital, while John Collins, a 66-year-old man, suffered a fractured pelvis and life-altering injuries. Foley pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to careless driving causing Fehilly's death and to careless driving causing serious bodily harm to Collins. On 4 November 2026, Ms Justice Helen Boyle sentenced Foley to 18 months fully suspended on each of two concurrent counts and disqualified her from driving for five years.
