latest first- Man sentenced to 13 years for dangerous driving death in Limerick Dangerous driving causing death; drive-by shooting · Co. Limerick
Kieran Fogarty, 21, was driving at 122km/h in a 50km/h zone on Dublin Road, Limerick, when he struck and killed Joe Drennan, 21, a University of Limerick journalism student from Mountrath, Co Laois, who was waiting at a bus stop on 13 October 2023. Fogarty had filmed himself speeding on his phone moments before the crash and spent 14 seconds wiping down the car before fleeing the scene. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in January 2025 to six-and-a-half years for dangerous driving causing death, to run concurrently with an eight-year term for a drive-by shooting in June 2023. In November 2025, the Court of Appeal, on a DPP appeal against undue leniency, increased the total sentence to 14 years with the final year suspended, made the sentences consecutive, and imposed a 20-year driving disqualification.
