Joe Drennan, a 21-year-old fourth-year journalism student at the University of Limerick from Mountrath, County Laois, was killed on 13 October 2023 when a car struck him while he was waiting at a bus stop on the Dublin Road in Castletroy, Limerick. Kieran Fogarty, who was 19 at the time, was driving a BMW at 122km/h in a 50km/h zone, broke a red light, collided with a white Volkswagen, and ploughed into the bus stop, pinning Drennan under the car before fleeing the scene. Fogarty was arrested in Cork over a week later, charged with dangerous driving causing death and other offences, and pleaded guilty to ten counts at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court in October 2024. On 30 January 2025, Judge Colin Daly sentenced him to six and a half years, running concurrently with an eight-year sentence for a separate firearms offence. The DPP has since lodged an appeal against the hit-and-run sentence.
