David O'Brien, 70, a former scout leader from Dublin, pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a boy aged nine or 10 on an overnight scouting trip in 1981. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in May 2022. O'Brien, who has 22 previous convictions for indecent assault, voluntarily told gardaí he abused upwards of 40 children between 1975 and 1983. He is currently serving a series of sentences in Midlands Prison Portlaoise and is not due for release until February 2025 at the earliest.
