A piebald foal was found with an eight-inch wound after being attacked by two lurcher dogs, and two greyhound-type dogs were also found in a state of neglect at a property on Canal Road, Letterkenny, on 16 January 2020; all three animals had to be put down. Danny Connors, a 49-year-old man from Letterkenny, was charged with animal cruelty under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013. In January 2022, a District Court judge refused jurisdiction, and in May 2023 Connors pleaded guilty at Letterkenny Circuit Court. In October 2023, he was sentenced to two years in prison with the final 12 months suspended, 12 months of probation, and a five-year ban on keeping or working with animals.
