On 16 May 2014, Zoltan Almasi, a 49-year-old Serbian man, struck 20-year-old Joseph Dunne on the back of the head with a baseball bat at Harbour View, Naas, Co Kildare, after believing Dunne had interfered with his van. Dunne, a student from Athy, died from the severe traumatic head injury. Almasi was convicted of murder in 2016, but the Supreme Court quashed the conviction, and his second and third trials both ended in hung juries. In July 2021, the DPP accepted a plea of manslaughter. On 8 September 2021, Mr Justice Michael White sentenced Almasi to 11 years in prison, backdated to 16 May 2014.
