  • Afghan former teacher jailed for six years for sexually assaulting teenage girl in Sligo Sexual assault · Co. Sligo

    In April 2023, a 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in a dark alley in Sligo by Ziaullhaq Safi, a 37-year-old Afghan former teacher who worked at a fast-food restaurant there. On 13 March 2026, a jury at Sligo Circuit Criminal Court found Safi guilty of sexual assault and of providing remuneration to a child for sexual exploitation after a three-week trial. Safi denies the offences and does not accept the verdict. On 13 April 2026, at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Roderick Maguire jailed him for six years for the sexual assault, with a concurrent term of four years and three months for the second charge.
