A 25-year-old Swedish woman, Zam Zam Abdikarim, was arrested at Terminal One, Dublin Airport on 13 January 2022 by the Garda National Immigration Bureau. She was charged under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Smuggling of Persons) Act 2021 with intentionally assisting the entry, transit or presence of another person in the State in breach of a specified provision. She appeared at Dublin District Court on 15 January 2022 before Judge Bryan Smyth, where she was remanded in custody to appear via video link on Friday pending directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions. She was the first person charged under the new people smuggling law, which was signed into law on 15 December 2021.
