On 3 March 2025, Gardaí and Revenue officers raided an illegal commercial cigarette factory in Ardee, Co. Louth, finding approximately 8 tonnes of raw tobacco, 660,000 illicit cigarettes branded NZ, precursor components, and about €4,500 in cash. Five men were arrested: Kevin Donnelly, 27, and four Ukrainian men, Maksym Kozachuk, 40, Maksym Kovbasenko, 37, Sergiy Avramov, 42, and Yurii Popko, 51. All five were charged with processing illicit tobacco product and being concerned with its processing at Richardstown, Ardee. They appeared before Dundalk District Court on 4 March 2025, where three co-accused were remanded on their own bond of €3,000 to Ardee District Court on 11 April, Donnelly was remanded in custody with consent to bail, and Kozachuk was remanded in custody with consent to bail to appear by videolink before Drogheda District Court.
