On 1 January 2026, Jordon Nevin, a man in his 30s, was assaulted in a one-punch attack on Barrack Street, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, and sustained life-threatening head injuries after falling and hitting his head on the ground. He was taken to Sligo University Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, where he died. Yevhen Shutko, a 46-year-old Ukrainian man from Loughglynn, Co Roscommon, was arrested on 2 January and charged on 3 January with assault causing serious harm under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, 1997. He was remanded in custody at Roscommon District Court on 4 January after bail was refused. On 9 January, Shutko reappeared at Ballaghaderreen District Court and was released on bail of €3,000, surrendering his passport and birth certificate.
