Yavor Poptoshev, a 49-year-old Bulgarian businessman, was charged with obstructing a Garda for allegedly failing to provide passwords to a laptop and two phones seized during a search of his Stillorgan apartment on 9 January 2024, conducted in relation to a third party for alleged social welfare fraud. He challenged the prosecution in the High Court and Supreme Court, arguing the 2001 Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act did not give authorities power to compel password disclosure, but those challenges were unsuccessful. In December 2025, Judge Anne Watkin of Dún Laoghaire District Court directed him to enter a plea on 5 February 2026. He is no longer in the jurisdiction and has not yet secured new legal representation.
