Patrick Nugent, a 23-year-old chef from Sixmilebridge, was found dead in the car park of The Barn at Bunratty Castle in the early hours of 11 February 1984 after suffering crush injuries, possibly from being struck by a car and crushed against a second vehicle. William Ryan, a chef at Shannon Airport who was celebrating his wedding anniversary that night, was charged in 1985 with manslaughter and dangerous driving but was acquitted by a jury. A 1985 inquest jury returned a verdict of accidental death. In 2022, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris ordered a fresh investigation following a report by retired judge Patrick Clyne, and in September 2024 Nugent's remains were exhumed from Feenagh cemetery for a new State post-mortem while Gardaí began interviewing over 100 witnesses from the party.
