  William Murphy, a 68-year-old man from Rhode, Co Offaly, was summonsed by Garda Kieran Fitzpatrick for driving without a valid NCT certificate at Dublin Road, Edenderry, on 2 August 2025. Judge Andrew Cody of the District Court dismissed the prosecution after ruling that evidence of a certificate of posting was inadmissible, and he later stated a case to the High Court on the admissibility of such certificates for fixed charge penalty notices. Legal aid was granted to Mr Murphy, and the judge gave June 24 as the next date. The latest report, dated 8 July 2026, says the summons was adjourned pending the High Court's opinion, with one account giving February 3 of the following year as the mention date.
