latest first- Donegan's Co Clare false imprisonment sentence reviewed by Court of Appeal False imprisonment · Co. Clare
On 9 November 2022, Scott Donegan, a 38-year-old man, was charged with falsely imprisoning his ex-partner, a woman, at his home in Knockmore, Kilmilhil, Co Clare, where she was allegedly held against her will for four hours while he ran at her with a kitchen knife and told her he had a shotgun and a Glock handgun. Additional charges of sexual assault, threatening to kill, and producing a kitchen knife were brought at Ennis District Court. In April 2023, Donegan pleaded guilty to false imprisonment and possession of a kitchen knife, with the sexual assault and threatening-to-kill charges struck out. On 25 September 2023, Judge Francis Comerford at Ennis Circuit Court sentenced him to a total of seven years and 10 months, combining a six-year, 11-month term for the false imprisonment with a separate sentence for a 2021 threat-to-kill offence. In June 2025, the Court of Appeal reviewed the sentence at the DPP's application as unduly lenient.
