  • Financial advisor sentenced to six years over Dublin fraud Fraud · Co. Dublin

    William Kiely, a 52-year-old man from Co Tipperary, set up Barrington Capital Ltd to purchase commercial property in the United States, but after the 2008 financial crash he allegedly used investors' funds in unauthorised stock market transactions, with individual losses of €50,000 to €120,000 and a total alleged defrauding of €750,000 to €1 million. Gardaí began investigating complaints in 2012 and Kiely was charged in July 2019 with 15 counts under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act. The Court of Appeal dismissed his bid to halt the trial in December 2021, and on the 21st day of the trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court he changed his plea to guilty on three counts. In April 2025, Judge Elma Sheahan sentenced Kiely to six years' imprisonment and automatically disqualified him from serving as a company director for five years.
