William Kavanagh (67), of Millbrook Court, Waterford, was convicted after a trial at the Central Criminal Court of 59 offences against his former wife and her younger sister, who was a child when the offending began. The offences took place in Waterford and Wexford between 1996 and 2006, when the younger sister was about seven to 16. Kavanagh pleaded not guilty to the charges, and in January 2026 he was given consecutive sentences totalling 17.5 years with the final year suspended on strict conditions, although one report gives the term as 16.5 years. Kavanagh does not accept the jury's verdict and maintains his innocence.
