  • Longford man fined €350 for assault on civil summons server Assault · Co. Longford

On 19 January 2023 at about 1.40pm, a man trying to serve a civil summons at the Esker, Ballinalee, Co Longford home of William Hughes (57) alleges that Hughes struck him three or four times in the face, leaving a bruise to his right eye. Hughes pleaded guilty to a section 2 assault before Judge Bernadette Owens at Longford District Court, where Sergeant Mark Mahon appeared for the state. The defence said Hughes had been hit by the injured party's car during the incident, and the court heard he has five previous convictions, some involving assaults. Reported on 4 April 2024, Hughes was fined €350 with six months to pay, and the judge warned that a further assault charge would bring a custodial sentence.

Baiba Saulite, a 28-year-old Latvian mother-of-two, was shot dead at her home in Swords, Co Dublin on 19 November 2006, and her murder remains unsolved with no one convicted. She had been subjected to domestic violence and was involved in a custody dispute with her former husband, referred to as Mr A. In 2008, retired Sgt William Hughes made a protected disclosure alleging systems failures in the Garda handling of the case.
