William Dollard, a 32-year-old man, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of sexually assaulting and attempting to anally rape a 61-year-old man in Co Cork on 30 May 2017. He was sentenced in June 2020 to five years and six months' imprisonment, with the final 18 months suspended for two years. Dollard appealed on the grounds that his arrest under Section 24 was unlawful and that his clothing was seized improperly. At the Court of Appeal hearing in March 2022, DPP counsel argued the arrest was lawful, and judgment has been reserved.
