On 8 February 2022 at Shanderry, Coolrain, Co. Laois, gardaí who responded to an ISPCA call were allegedly threatened with a slash hook by William Bergin, reported as 78 or 79 years old. Bergin, of The Glebe, Coolrain, was charged with threatening to kill or cause serious harm. In May 2024 he appeared at Portlaoise District Court, where Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby gave evidence and the case was adjourned to 24 June. In September 2024 he admitted making threats to a garda, was ordered to pay €1,000 to the ISPCA, and the charge was struck out once the money was paid.
