latest first- Inquest ongoing into fatal shooting of George Nkencho in Clonee, Dublin Fatal shooting (police use of force) · Co. Dublin
George Nkencho, a 27-year-old man, was shot multiple times by members of the Garda Armed Support Unit outside his family home in Clonee, Dublin 15, on 30 December 2020 during a stand-off in which he was armed with a kitchen knife and suffering from mental health difficulties. The incident followed an alleged unprovoked assault on shop worker Wayne Swords at a Eurospar store in Hartstown. GSOC, now Fiosrú, completed its two-year investigation in June 2023 and the DPP directed no prosecution of the gardaí involved in April 2024, a decision the family's appeal did not overturn. The full inquest before a jury at Dublin District Coroner's Court began on 13 January 2026 and is hearing testimony from gardaí, family members and eyewitnesses.
