Wayne Byrne, a 42-year-old man from Dundalk, was sentenced at Dundalk district court in February 2022 for possession of an axe. Gardaí received an anonymous report at 4.50am on 31 October 2021 of a man acting suspiciously on the Newry Road in Dundalk. Byrne, who matched the description, was found near the Armagh Road junction and an axe was discovered behind an electrical box. He claimed an unknown man had attacked him with the axe and that he had disarmed the assailant. Judge Eirinn McKeirnan suspended a four-month sentence on a 12-month good behaviour bond, with 109 previous convictions noted and the defence citing drug difficulties and Turas counselling.
