Dean Hayes, 37, a man from Limerick, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated burglary and assault causing serious harm after he broke into the home of Waleed Mustafa, 45, a man originally from Sudan who worked as a doctor, at Newcastle, Dublin Road, Castletroy, Limerick, around 9pm on 20 June 2024. Hayes stabbed Mustafa multiple times with a knife, causing wounds to his abdomen, back, neck, forehead and fingers, and the first knife broke during the attack. Hayes was charged on 22 June 2024 and originally faced an attempted murder charge, which the DPP later dropped by nolle prosequi. He pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and intentionally causing serious harm at the Central Criminal Court, and Mr Justice David Keane imposed a 10-year sentence on 3 February 2026.
