Vincent Tighe, 66, a former principal of Annaduff National School in County Leitrim, inflated the school's enrolment figures by three pupils to keep a teaching post for 2019/20. The annual census on 9 October 2019 certified 201 pupils, but the true number was 198. An anonymous tip-off to the Department of Education in June 2020 led to an audit, a Board of Management investigation and a referral to Gardaí. Garda Benson gave evidence of his arrest and charge on DPP directions, and Tighe made a signed statement in a voluntary interview at Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station on 18 December 2023. On 16 September 2025 he pleaded guilty to fraud at Carrick-on-Shannon District Court and was bailed on his own bond of €200, and the case was adjourned to 21 January 2026 for a Probation and Welfare Report and sentence.
